Licensure Specific Coursework | Applicants must possess at least a master's degree or its equivalent in the area of audiology from an educational institution recognized by the board. Twenty-seven (27) semester hours in basic science coursework must be completed and include: At least six (6) semester hours in biological and/or physical sciences and mathematics; at least six (6) semester hours in the behavioral and/or social sciences; and at least fifteen (15) semester hours in basic human communication processes and must include coursework in (1) Anatomic and physiologic bases; (2) Physical and psychophysical bases; and (3) Linguistic and psycholinguistic aspects. Audiologist applications must document at least 36 semester hours in professional coursework which must include: at least 30 semester hours of graduate coursework: 21 of which shall be in the area of audiology; at least 30 semester hours in audiology; at least six (6) of which shall be in hearing disorders and hearing evaluation, and at least six (6) in habilitative and/or rehabilitative procedures, with individuals who have a hearing impairment; at least six (6) semester hours in speech pathology; at least three (3) of which shall be in speech disorders and at least three (3) in language disorders, and a maximum of six (6) academic semester hours associated with clinical practicum (may be counted toward the minimum of 36 semester hours of professional coursework). | |
Licensure Require Specific Field or Clinical Work? | (1) A minimum of three hundred seventy-five hours of supervised clinical observation and clinical practicum with individuals who present a variety of communication disorders, which experience shall have been obtained within the applicant's training institution or in one of its cooperating programs; and (2) a clinical fellowship which shall have: (A) begun after completion of academic coursework & clinical observation and clinical practicum; (B) consisted of at least thirty-six (36) weeks of full-time professional experience or its part-time equivalent; (C) been completed under the supervision of an individual who holds the certificate of clinical competence in the area of practice for which the certificate is sought, or board certification in audiology from the ABA for an audiologist applicant. (D) consisted of primarily clinical activities and (E) required the supervisor to periodically conduct a formal evaluation of the applicant's progress in the development of professional skills. |

Alternative Route Provisional or Temporary | There are two routes to earn alternative teacher certification in Hawaii; 1) Alternative Education Preparation programs (EPP) Route is the main route to alternative teacher certification and requires candidates to apply to an approved EPP & receive a pre-service evaluation. Candidates must take the Praxis content area assessment for the endorsement sought. 2) Career and Technical Education Limited Standard Licensure: Trade professionals with three years of experience in their field and an associate’s degree who meet additional requirements may be eligible to receive a Career and Technical Education Limited Standard License to teach career and technical education (CTE) subjects. Additional requirements include passing a Praxis II content-area exam, if available, in the subject to be taught; current valid national industry certification or a state license in the subject to be taught, or 30 hours of content coursework in the subject to be taught. Candidates must also have at least 12 hours of pedagogy coursework from a state-approved teacher education program for the grade level(s) to be taught and pass the Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) for that grade level. |
