  1. Teacher candidates must complete required reading courses which for prospective elementary teachers consist of six semester credit hours.
  2. Special Education preparation programs will generally take courses in subject areas such as a) Strategies for Learning Disabilities, b) Special Needs classroom management, c) Literacy Instruction for Learning Disabilities, and d) Emotional Impairments teaching strategies.
  3. Complete a first aid and CPR course.

(b) Fifteen semester hours of work in areas of theoretical and practical knowledge as outlined in R 340.1165. (2) A standard school nurse certificate is valid for 3 years and may be renewed for 1 additional 3-year period upon recommendation of the employing school district if the holder has completed a total of 24 semester hours of course work outlined in R 340.1165. An additional 3 years' renewal may be given upon recommendation of the employing school district if the holder has completed a total of 36 semester hours of course work outlined in R 340.1165. (3) This rule is in effect as long as the applicant holds a currently valid Michigan license as a registered nurse.

Licensure Require Specific Field or Clinical Work? A 2,000-hour internship was completed during the doctorate degree program. A fully licensed psychologist must supervise the internship. The supervisor must list the duties performed including assessment (testing), evaluation, and treatment, and verify that the duties were performed in an organized health care setting. The applicant must meet individually and in person with the supervisor for at least 8 hours per month during the internship. The applicant is required to work at least 20 hours per week in the internship program.

Additional requirements specific for schools? An individual who is a fully licensed psychologist by the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) may be employed as a school psychologist according to R340.1799e of the Special Education Administrative (SEA) Rules.

SEA Credential: 1. Preliminary School Psychologist Certificate: Requires a minimum of 45 graduate semester hours (not including internship) in an approved program towards a school psychologist credential. Also requires at least a 600-hour internship with school-age students (of which at least 300 must be in a school setting under the supervision of a person holding a Michigan school psychologist credential). 2. School Psychologist Certificate: Requires a valid Preliminary School Psychologist Certificate and a specialist degree or equivalent in school psychology from an institution with an approved program. It also requires an additional minimum of 15 graduate semester hours in school psychology, including an internship, in addition to the 45 credit hours required for the preliminary certificate. In addition to the 600 clock hours required for the preliminary certificate, a minimum 600-clock-hour supervised internship is required with school-age pupils in an approved school psychologist program, 300 clock hours of which shall be in a school setting. The NCSP is accepted as a route to obtain this credential.

School Psychologist

Licensure Require Specific Field or Clinical Work? For a Preliminary Certificate, a candidate must complete a supervised internship of not less than 600 hours under the supervision of a certified school psychologist. At least 300 of these hours must have been in a school setting. To receive the standard certificate, candidates will need 15 semester hours beyond the requirements for the preliminary certificate and a total of 1,200 hours of the internship; at least 600 must have been completed in a school setting.
Additional requirements specific for schools? A psychologist who is “fully licensed” by the Michigan State Board can be authorized to serve as a school psychologist as per Special Education Rule R340.1799e. "Fully Licensed" professional psychologists hold doctoral degrees in psychology or in a related field. They have completed 2,000 hours of internship and 2,000 hours of postdoctoral supervised practice. They have passed the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) and are eligible for private practice or employment in any of many settings.

Social Worker

Documentation from the employer of the satisfactorily completion of 1 year as a school social worker with direction from a fully approved school social worker.
