b. At a minimum, the following graduate-level coursework:

  1. Individual & Family Development (6 quarter or 4 semester hours)
  2. The couple and Family Theoretical Foundation Studies (9 quarter or 6-semester credits)
  3. The Couple and Family Therapy, Treatment, and Techniques Studies (9 quarter or 6 semester hours)
  4. Diagnosis of mental disorders (3 quarter or 2-semester credits)
  5. Diversity studies that include issues related to diversity, power, and privilege (3 quarter or 2-semester credits)
  6. Ethical and Professional Studies (3 quarter or 2-semester credits)
  7. Research Methods or Statistics (3 quarter or 2-semester credits)
  8. Supporting coursework focusing on counseling and/or systems approaches (54 quarter or 36 semester hours)

c. A supervised clinical practicum or internship experience of at least 700 clock hours with 280 hours of direct client contact.

(A)Internship/Pre-degree Method: 2,400 supervised direct client contact hours of therapy, including at least 1,000 hours working with couples and families. This may include up to 400 pre-degree hours.

a. For those that apply to become a licensed marriage and family therapist before January 2, 2014, consisted of no less than 2,000 supervised direct client contact hours of therapy with at least 1,000 of those hours working with couples and families.
b. those who apply on or after January 2, 2014, require no less than 2,400 supervised direct client contact hours of therapy, with at least 1,000 of those hours working with couples and families.
(C). Clinical practicum or internship experience must have: Made provision for faculty monitoring of operations; Kept records of student-client contact hours including a summary of student progress by the supervisor; Had a written agreement with the program and student specifying learning objectives; and Had a mechanism for program evaluation.

A clinical practicum of a minimum of 400 clock hours, 25 must be spent in guided clinical observation and 375 must be direct clinical interaction. Supervision must be provided by a speech-language pathologist who holds a Certificate of Clinical Competency from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. At least 325 of these clock hours must be completed while in an accredited graduate program. 2. Supervised Clinical Experience after completing all graduate degree requirements: a) Supervised by a speech-language pathologist who holds a Certificate of Clinical Competency from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. b) A minimum of 35 hours per week for 36 weeks of practice, or its equivalent, for a total of not less than 1,260 hours; c) A minimum of 80% of the hours spent in direct client/patient contact (assessment/diagnosis/evaluation, screening, treatment, report writing, family/client consultation, and/or counseling), with the remainder in related record keeping and administrative duties.
Licensure Dependent on an Exam? If a practitioner has never held ASHA CCC's (Certificate of Clinical Competence) they are then required to take Praxis II Speech-Language Pathology (Score of 600).
